4Plus Documentary Photography Center presents the first Armenian translation of Roland Barthes’ Camera Lucida, one of the most influential works on the theory and philosophy of photography.

Originally published in 1980, Camera Lucida is widely regarded as one of the most important books ever written about photography.

This edition is the second volume in 4Plus Documentary Photography Center’s photography book series (the first being Walter Benjamin’s Photography and History). The series aims to make key texts of photographic thought accessible to Armenian readers.

The publication also includes the companion zine “Bard Bart Barth” which traces the story behind the Armenian translation of Camera Lucida and features two interviews with Roland Barthes—conducted before and after the publication of the book translated by the book’s editor Marc Nichanian.
